Tom Gray, Founding Principal of Preserve Communities, Inc., will introduce the history and evolution of Rancho San Carlos as it became the Santa Lucia Preserve.

The story of the Santa Lucia Preserve begins in the 6th Century and continued into the Spanish Mission era of 1770-1821; Mexican Californios 1822-1848; Homesteading1849-1870; Cattle Barons1870 -1920; Gatsby era1920-39; the Oppenheimer estate1940-1990; and finally the Santa Lucia Preserve from 1990 to the wild-land beauty today.

In terms of wildlife vitality, there is a strong argument that the Preserve represents the best of coastal California, and that the plan for the Preserve provides the most realistic long-range opportunity to protect those values. The development and conservation projects are both complete with $500 million in proceeds and $25 million in endowment funds to the Conservancy, respectively.

Tom and his wife Alayna, the first residents of the Preserve, recently published “History of Rancho San Carlos [1834-1990].” The book commemorates the lives of those pioneers who preceded the development partners — and of the homesite purchasers who are today’s community members.

Tom is a graduate of Stanford University (bachelor’s in Economics) and UCLA (master’s in finance and computer sciences). He has a long association with the advancement of CSUMB and is past chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County.

Michael's introduction to his father's life will resonate with all interested in photography, music, California of yesterday - including San Francisco and Yosemite, environmental conservation, and the subject of human achievement. Michael’s talk will be illustrated with Ansel’s images from the family scrapbook and more.

Michael was born in Yosemite in 1933. He met his wife, Jeanne, while skiing at Badger Pass and they married in Yosemite’s Old Village Chapel in 1962. While attending Stanford University, Michael took a midstream leap into the US Air Force as an aviation cadet in 1954. From there, he advanced well over the course of 42 years, as a fighter pilot.

After earning his medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in 1967, Michael merged his passions for military flight and medicine becoming a flight-surgeon and pilot-physician. He advanced to be appointed the USAF Chief of Flight Medicine and Chief of Aerospace Medicine. He was promoted to Major General allowing him to complete his service as USAF Deputy Surgeon General, retiring in 1993.

While still active in their family’s interests in Yosemite, Michael and Jeanne make Carmel their home.

Dave Potter was elected for a two-year term as Mayor of Carmel, receiving 60% of the vote, in 2018. Dave's career includes a variety of positions in public service. He served as the 5th District representative and chairman of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, board member and chairman of the Fort Ord Reuse Authority, and board member and chairman of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District board. For twenty years he served on the Natividad Medical Center Board of Trustees, represented the Central Coast on the California Coastal Commission, and served on the Monterey City Council and the Monterey City Planning Commission. A resident of Monterey County since 1970, Dave has also led numerous public initiatives.

Dave is married and lives with his wife, Janine in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. He has two adult children, Sarah and Tyler.

Scott Delucchi, Executive Director & CEO of the Monterey County SPCA, will speak to us on the achievements and future plans of the SPCA.

Scott has led the SPCA, made up of 75 paid employees and 400 volunteers, since 2016.  Prior to joining the SPCA, he was a senior vice president with the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo County for 17 years guiding the organization through a period of sizable growth.

Before embarking on his career in the animal welfare field, Scott was a high school teacher and administrator and worked briefly as a senior level director with the YMCA.  

Scott is a San Francisco Bay Area native and graduated with a degree in communications from Stanford University.  While at Stanford, he played on two national champion baseball teams.  Scott shares his home with his wife, two children and two rescue dogs, one of which he adopted from the SPCA this past July.

Dr. Richard German will enlighten us about Testosterone, our on-going needs and the impact on aging.

Dr. German will introduce the safe and effective use of BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy) for both men and women.  He will outline the benefits and side effects of appropriately administered BHRT, and how it protects against the aging process.

Dr. German is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and an instructor of Surgery at UCLA. He was a Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy, USS Albany/Long Beach Naval Hospital.  Having over forty years of professional experience, he has been affiliated with a number of California hospitals.  He has been in private practice for most of his professional career and is certified in advanced bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (ABHR). Currently, Dr. German is the Medical Director/Owner of the BHRT medical practice in Carmel.

"Veteran homeless -- state crisis, local solutions.”

Kurt Schake, executive director of the Veterans Transition Center (VTC) in Marina, will introduce the numbers, reasons, and treatment of veterans.

Mr. Schake served 25 years as an Air Force fighter pilot and professor.  In his last two assignments he served as Dean of the NATO school, then Air War College.  In his military career, he spent a decade in Europe, most of that time with NATO.  He graduated from the Air Force Academy and has a PhD in International History from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Since 2017, he has helped expand VTC programs to provide more services to homeless veterans and families.  VTC has twenty duplexes at the old Ft Ord, where over one hundred veterans and family members are housed. With a staff of twenty and a wide network of volunteers, they provide all wrap-around services for VTC residents: food, clothing, furniture, substance abuse counseling, medical referrals, job training, and permanent housing support

Captain Rich “Coyote” Wiley is the Commanding Officer Of Naval Support Activity Monterey.

We will learn more about the navy’s mission and impact in Monterey...along with how Captain Wiley got branded "Coyote."

Captain Wiley is a native of Greenfield, California and a 1987 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He took command of Naval Support Activity Monterey Dec. 9, 2016. The installation provides base operations support to 15 tenant commands.

Captain Wiley deployed around the world aboard six aircraft carriers -- USS Kitty Hawk, USS Nimitz ,USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Harry S. Truman, and his final deployments at sea aboard USS Carl Vinson, where he served as the “air boss” and completed two successive Western Pacific, North Arabian Sea, and Arabian Gulf deployments.

During his career, he accumulated over 3,400 flight hours and nearly 800 carrier arrested landings in five different aircraft -- the A-6E, T-45A, E-2C, C-2A and F/A-18E/F aircraft. He was selected for major command and assumed command of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake.

Ron Sheffield will describe the extraordinary feat of building and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope

Ron’s distinguished aerospace career began in the military and continued with numerous ground breaking programs with Lockheed Martin.  He served in the US Army for 20 years as an Infantry Aviator and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982.  Ron served 3 tours in Vietnam as a helicopter gun ship pilot with 2,200 hours of combat flight time.  His awards include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguish Flying Cross, and many other air medals.

Ron recently retired as the Manager, Extravehicular Activity and Crew Systems on the Hubble Space Telescope Program for Lockheed Martin.  His significant achievements include helping build the Hubble Space Telescope at Sunnyvale, and making all the Hubble components serviceable on-orbit.  In addition he trained the astronauts to service the Hubble Space Telescope on-orbit,

Ron has a BS in Math Education and Masters in Public Administration.  He lives on the Monterey Peninsula with his wife, Linda.

David Stivers, President of the Pebble Beach Company and Chairman of the 2019 U.S. Open, will brief us on the preparation leading up to the June Open at Pebble Beach.

Mr. Stivers oversees the multiple facets of the Company's business interests, ranging from sales, marketing and sponsorship to real estate development associated with its Del Monte Forest Plan. In addition to his responsibilities as President, he oversees real estate, legal, resort reservations and revenue management.

He joined the Pebble Beach Company in 1999 as an Executive Vice President. Prior to that he was with the Promus Hotel Corporation, where he served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Hospitality Ventures Group.

Mr. Stivers is originally from the West Coast and received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983, and J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1987. He and his wife, Jean and four children reside in Pebble Beach
